"...this sankirtana or street chanting must go on, it is our most important program. Lord Caitanya's movement means the sankirtana movement. You may simply take two hours for chanting sixteen rounds daily, two hours for reading congregationally, and balance of time go out for sankirtana. We must do both, reading books and distributing books, but distributing books is the main propaganda."
Srila Prabhupada Letter, 18th Sept 1972
Harinam is the congregational street chanting of the holy names of Krishna. 500 years ago Lord Krishna came as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He appeared as a devotee of Krishna (Himself) to reawaken all the conditioned souls by the method of harinama-sankirtana. He would go with His followers into the streets and chant the Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. Mantras were only chanted softly until Lord Chaitanya started Harinam Sankirtan, the loud public and congregational chanting of the maha-mantra accompanied by musical instruments. He also taught the devotees to gracefully dance to the chanting.
Following in Lord Chaitanya’s footsteps, devotees from kids to youths and senior devotees chant and dance in the city streets, traveling to various places of Penang to give an opportunity to the conditioned souls to hear and benefit from hearing Krishna’s holy names.
Every month, the devotees go out to famous tourist spots in Penang for more then 3 hours or so to propagate the Holy Name of Krishna. & perform Harinam Sankirtana for the pleasure of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. At the same time, we also distribute the Lord’s Prasadam and Srila Prabhupada’s books to passerby and people around. If anyone is interested in performing the Yuga Dharma Harinam Sankirtan in Penang, is cordially invited to join us at Sri Sri Radha Krishna Kanhaiya Temple of Devotion & Understanding and assist in this effort to please His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.
