One of the most important festivals and occasions for the ISKCON devotees is the Srila Prabhupada’s Appearance Day. This day is celebrated to joyfully glorify the appearance of Srila Prabhupada, the eternal saviour of the devotees. In different ISKCON temples all across the globe, read various offerings & dedications to Srila Prabhupada from his disciples & other prominent ISKCON figures collected in the annual Vyasa Puja Book, and a grand feast marks the occasion.

Srila Prabhupada appeared in the Kaliyuga and it is believed that Lord Krishna had sent him to assist Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to fulfil His prediction that Lord Krishna’s name will be heard throughout the globe. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu prediction was – “Prtvithe ache yata nagaradi grama, sarvatra pracara haibe more nama”. It means in every city and village, My name will be heard.

Srila Prabhupada appeared on Nanadotsava. Nandotsava means: Nanda Maharaja’s huge festival celebrating Krishna’s birth. On this occasion, Nanda Maharaja dressed in luxurious garments and distributed profuse charity to everyone in his kingdom. He gave away opulent cloth and ornaments and two million richly decorated cows to the brahmanas.

It was on this special occasion that Srila Prabhupada appeared in order to spread Krishna Consciousness everywhere. As such, the ISKCON devotees celebrate his appearance day on the next day of Janmashtami, after celebrating Lord Krishna’s birth.
